Field Hockey Falls in Overtime to Lehigh, 2-1, in Patriot League Title Game

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Boston University field hockey team came up just short in its bid for a Patriot League title on Saturday as Lehigh scored 7:14 into overtime to complete a 2-1 comeback victory at the Jacobs Recreational Complex on the campus of American University.

Graduate student Casey Thompson opened the scoring in the 42nd minute off a pass from freshman Martu Coulo. Lehigh got the equalizer on a redirect from a deep entry ball in the 50th minute.

After BU was unable to score on the first corner of overtime, the Mountain Hawks earned back-to-back corners and ended the game on the latter. Guusje Hogendoorn's shot from the top of the circle found the right corner of the cage to give the Mountain Hawks their first PL title in 28 years.

The Terriers end the season with a record of 10-9. Thompson and seniors Rachel Borzymowski and Caroline Kelly were all named to the PL All-Tournament Team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening half was a tale of two quarters as the Terriers dominated play in the opening quarter before the Mountain Hawks owned the second.
  • BU outshot Lehigh 9-0 in the first and earned five corners but Lehigh goalkeeper Maddie Kahn came up big and kept it a scoreless game.
  • In the second quarter, Lehigh had eight shots to BU's one and forced Kelly to make six saves in the process.
  • The second half and overtime was a back-and-forth battle and the Terriers struck first off a restart.
  • From the right side of the circle Coulo dribbled down to the end line and got around a defender before finding Thompson in front as the midfielder got a stick on the ball as she slid to the ground at the 41:45 mark.
  • The Terriers looked to extend the lead shortly after on a penalty corner but sophomore Payton Anderson's shot was blocked and another shot moments later by junior Tess Csejka was saved.
  • Lehigh's equalizer stunned the Terriers as a hard entry ball by Sarah Bonthuis from just outside the 25 found the stick of Maddie Kandra just barely inside the circle and ended up in the lower left corner of the cage, just past the reach of Kelly.
  • Both teams had chances at late winners in regulation, earning two corners apiece, but the Terriers weren't able to muster a shot on goal on theirs.
  • The Mountain Hawks got their corners back-to-back with time expired and nearly scored on the latter as Bonthuis' tip-in attempt at the left post was barely wide.
  • The Terriers dominated the early stages of overtime and put four shots on goal while earning a corner, but Kahn and the Lehigh defense was up to the task each time.
  • Lehigh earned consecutive corners and used the final one to break their 28-year championship drought.
  • After Kelly made a save on the first corner attempt, the second one was set up for Hogendoorn and she placed it perfectly to the right boards for the win at the 67:14 mark.
