BU Athletics Undergoes Summer Renovations at Three Outdoor Facilities
August 1, 2022 | General
BOSTON - Boston University Athletics is undergoing significant renovations at three of its facilities this summer as the surfaces of Nickerson Field and New Balance Field are being replaced and a new dock is being installed at the DeWolfe Boathouse.
The new surface at Nickerson Field will be Geosurfaces GreenFields Ironturf with 2-inch rubber and sand infill. The blended system features woven, monofilament diamond fibers and isotropic XP slit film fibers, creating the most durable turf ever tested. A Brock SP-17 sports pad will be placed underneath the turf to aid in increasing player safety to ranges found in natural grass surfaces. The new field includes approximately 340,000 pounds of crumb rubber and 330,000 pounds of sand.
The surrounding four-lane track will also be resurfaced and new netting will be installed in addition to landscape turf adjacent to the field to add additional training space. The primary department logo will be permanently woven into the field, which will be ready to use this week for the start of soccer preseason training.
The New Balance Field project entails a complete resurface as well as a restructure of the field and concourse subsurface in addition to waterproofing enhancements. The new turf will be A12 Astroturf, a knitted nylon monofilament fabric construction that makes for a fast, smooth, non-directional and durable surface.
The hockey field will be "stadium green" while the outer boundaries will be a darker "turf green." The west end zone will include an arched Boston logo and new padding and netting will also be installed. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.
The DeWolfe Boathouse project includes renovating the existing floating dock and façade enhancements, including the installation of a new sign, replacement of weathered materials and painting. A second phase will add an extension to allow for more boats to load and unload simultaneously.
