Terriers Extend Win Streak against Adelphi and MIT
February 11, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CUMBERLAND, R.I. and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Extending their win streak to four matches, the Boston University men's tennis team outlasted Adelphi, 4-3, at the ForeCourt Tennis Club in Rhode Island Saturday morning and then rolled later that evening to a 4-1 victory at MIT.
The Terriers (4-2) captured four singles points, including two in three-set marathons, to rally past the Panthers (2-1). In the second contest against the 22-time defending NEWMAC champion Engineers (0-2), BU won two of three doubles matches and then captured three singles points, including two in straight sets.
Both freshmen Corey Craig and Alejandro Licea went 2-0 in singles play to help the Terriers earn their longest win streak since also winning four straight in 2018.
They came up clutch, as the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning in doubles at lines 2 and 3 with an identical score of 6-4. Craig dropped just four games in a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 2 slot, while sophomore Cole Knutsen held off a late rally at No. 6 for another critical point, 6-0, 7-6(5).
Adelphi won in straight sets at No. 3 singles for its second point and was seemingly on its way to another straight sets win in the top spot. However, sophomore Dion Loutas rallied to win the second before ultimately coming up just short in a hard-fought tiebreaker, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(8).
Junior Ben Letzer had a slow start as well and turned on the jets in the second set to cruise to a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 come-from-behind win at line 5. In the last match, Licea broke late to clinch the team victory in a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 thrilling victory.
Later in the evening at MIT, BU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in doubles. Knutsen and junior Jonah Dickson posted a 6-3 win at line 2, while Letzer and Craig pulled out a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 slot. The Engineers prevented a doubles sweep by edging Loutas and Licea, 7-5, in the top match.
Loutas bounced back by rolling to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while Craig earned a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory in the No. 2 slot. Licea captured the third point after dropping the first-set tiebreaker by winning a hard-fought second set and then cruising in the third en route to the 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-0 victory.
The Terriers will end the weekend by visiting Brown on Sunday (Feb. 12) at 10 a.m.
