Terriers Capture Two Races, Huskies Retain Arlett Cup
April 1, 2023 | Men's Rowing
BOSTON – The Boston University men's rowing program earned two victories in the Third and Fourth Varsity 8 races, but Northeastern won the Arlett Cup as the two teams squared off on Saturday (April 1) on the Charles River.
Heavy fog rolled in through the evening to lower visibility, and a morning drizzle became heavier as racing wore on. However, relatively calm water presented itself for all four races.
In the battle for the Arlett Cup, the Terrier V8, coxed by Peter Adams and stroked by Paul Seiters, maintained pace in the early going with the Huskies, but Northeastern pulled away after 500 meters to finish in 5:47.7, ahead of BU's 5:55.6.
The 2V8, coxed by Emily Slawin and stroked by Gabriel Stekl, led by nearly four seats as the teams navigated under the Harvard Bridge. However, a late Northeastern surge in the final quarter leg gave the Huskies the win in a time of 5:55.2. The Terriers crossed the line in 5:58.5.
BU notched its first win with the 3V8, coxed by Luke Stroh and stroked by Stefan Scornavacca. The Terriers gained five seats on the Huskies towards the middle of the race and finished about six seats in front, clocking in at 6:02.0.
In the 4V8 race, both boats were even until the BU crew, coxed by Micah Lee and stroked by Dylan Fagiani, picked up steam near MIT's boathouse, and won by nearly one length with a time of 6:12.0, three seconds ahead of Northeastern. BU has won both 4V8 races in the spring.
The Terriers split up in its upcoming races on Saturday (April 8). The V8 and 2V8 travel to Redwood City, Calif. for the Pac-12 Challenge, racing Stanford and Cal on Saturday and Wisconsin on Sunday (April 9). Meanwhile, the 3V8 and 4V8 take to the Charles once again to square off against Harvard and Brown on Saturday. More information about race schedules will be published in the days leading up to the action.
