Terriers Retain Council Cup Over Northeastern
April 15, 2023 | Women's Rowing
BOSTON – The Boston University women's rowing program closed out the dual race portion of its schedule with a Council Cup victory over Northeastern on Saturday (April 15) on the Charles River. Overall, the Terriers won three events.
BU captured the Council Cup in the Varsity 8 race for the second-consecutive year, marking the first time since 2012-13 that the Terriers have won in back-to-back seasons. The crew, coxed by Trisha Jaggi and stroked by Sofia Suhinin, built a six-seat lead in the opening half of the 2,000-meter course, leading by as many as two seats of open water. BU crossed the line in 6:33.7, nearly five seconds ahead of the Huskies.
The Terriers took first in the Second Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 4 competitions. In the 2V8, which was coxed by Audrey Lucerne and stroked by Tiare Hicks, BU sported nearly a full-length lead at the midway point. However, Northeastern's sprint in the final 500 meters led to a photo finish, with the Terrier bow ball crossing at 6:49.8, just four-tenths in front.
In the 2V4, BU's V4 "B" crew, coxed by Kennedy Walker and stroked by Lucy Stevens, cruised to a finish of 7:43.0, 13 seconds ahead of the Huskies.
Northeastern was victorious in the Varsity 4 and Third Varsity 8 race. In the former, the Terriers, coxed by Valeria Lizarraga Ramirez and stroked by Sally Thoden, clocked in at 7:49.3, less than three seconds behind the Huskies. The Terrier 3V8 crew, coxed by Alex Aravides and stroked by Abby Berg, posted a time of 7:03.2 to place third in the event.
After the races, BU honored its Class of 2023 with a ceremony, featuring words from Director of Rowing Madeline Davis Tully and Anna Dechantsreiter.
BU travels for the first time this spring when it heads to the Lake Wheeler Invite in North Carolina, taking place from April 21-22.
