Women’s Rowing Set For Patriot League Championships On Friday
May 11, 2023 | Women's Rowing
BOSTON – Seeking its second-consecutive title, the Boston University women's rowing program competes in the 2023 Patriot League Championship on Friday (May 12) on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
Friday's races are available to watch on ESPN+, requiring a subscription. Fans can watch online as well as through the ESPN app with the subscription. The morning heats and afternoon finals will be split into two broadcasts, available through the links at the top of the article.
Racing begins at 8:02 a.m. with the first Varsity 4 heats, while the Petite and Grand Finals start at 1:20 p.m. BU, along with rivals Bucknell, Colgate, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland, MIT, and Navy, will send out Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Varsity 4 crews. The Terriers are the top-ranked crews in their Eights, and No. 2 in the V4.
The top three boats in the morning heats will advance to the Grand Finals, with the rest heading to the Petite Finals. The championship scores on a weighted scale; the Grand Final winner in the V4 earns nine points, the 2V8 winner receives 18 points, and the V8 receives 27 points. The Patriot League champion goes to the school that receives the most points, with the V8 winner serving as the tiebreaker.
The Patriot League Coach of the Year is selected by head coaches following the race, while the Boat of the Year goes to the V8 gold medalist. All-Patriot League teams will be announced next week.
BU aims for its first repeat championship since joining the Patriot League ahead of the 2014 spring season. The Terriers captured the 2014 title on Lake Quinsigamond, then secured its second Patriot League championship in 2022 on the Cooper River. In that race, BU won the Second Varsity 8 Grand Final for the first time as a league member, and earned silver and bronze in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 Grand Finals, respectively. Director of Rowing Madeline Davis Tully was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year in the postrace ceremony.
In the spring, the Terriers posted dual race sweeps of Dartmouth and league rival MIT, and retained the Council Cup over local foe Northeastern. After recording five combined top-three performances at the Lake Wheeler Invite, BU won two Petite Finals as part of five entries earning spots in the Petite or Grand Finals at the Eastern Sprints. On April 19, the Terrier Varsity 8 was named the Patriot League's Boat of the Week.
The 2023 Patriot League champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which take place from May 26-28 on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.
