Williams Lifts Softball to 2-1 Walk-Off Victory over Colgate

BOSTON – Scoring a run in each of the last two innings, the Boston University softball team claimed a 2-1 home walk-off victory over Colgate on Friday afternoon in the series opener.

With their 20th straight win, the Terriers (40-7, 10-0 PL) have reached 40 victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history and fourth time overall. Graduate student Nicole Amodio started the rally in the sixth with an RBI sac fly, and sophomore Tyesha Williams defeated the Raiders (16-24, 5-5 PL) with an RBI single.

Freshman Brooke Deppiesse tallied a personal-best three hits, while junior Lauren Keleher earned three-plus hits for the fifth time. Junior Lauren Nett and senior Audrey Sellers collected two hits apiece as well.

In the circle, freshman Kasey Ricard (17-2) came out ahead in the pitchers' duel by using four strikeouts to keep Colgate hitless over the last 1.2 innings in relief after senior Allison Boaz also tallied four strikeouts against seven hits allowed, including a solo homer in the fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders started with a one-out single, but the BU defense turned a 5-4-3 double play in the top of the first.
  • Colgate kept the pressure on in the second by putting two on via an error and single before Boaz earned another ground out to senior Caitlin Coker at third.
  • BU had two Terriers reach base in both the second and third innings but hurt themselves with a runner being thrown out two times.
  • Boaz started the fourth with a strikeout before Taylor Ludwick lifted the first pitch toward right center for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Terriers earned a pair of singles in the fifth and loaded the bases on a two-out hit-by-pitch before Bailey Misken (8-11) earned an infield pop up to maintain the 1-0 lead.
  • Trying to add more runs, Colgate started the sixth with a lead-off single and advancement on a wild pitch against Boaz before Ricard loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and two-out walk.
  • Ricard got out of the jam with a swinging strikeout.
  • In the bottom half, Deppiesse hit a one-out single to left, took third on Nett's double and scored on Amodio's one-out RBI sac fly.
  • Keleher helped put the game away in the seventh by hitting a lead-off double, taking third on a ground out and scoring on Williams' RBI single through the left side.
GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers are three wins away from tying the program record set back in 2009.
  • Deppiesse became the eighth Terrier to record at least three hits in a game this season.
  • The Terriers improved to 6-3 in one-run decisions this season.
  • BU has now won 27 of the 28 all-time meetings with a 16-0 mark at home. Five of the last 11 meetings though have been decided by one run apiece.
UP NEXT
  • BU will wrap up the series with a doubleheader against Colgate on Saturday (April 22) starting at 12 p.m.
