No. 13 Men’s Rowing Returns To Action At Lake Morey Invite
April 28, 2023 | Men's Rowing
BOSTON – The Boston University men's rowing program resumes racing for the first time in three weeks when it travels to Vermont to compete against three teams in the Lake Morey Invite, starting on Saturday (April 29).
BU squares off against No. 5 Syracuse and No. 16 Georgetown on Saturday, with the Conlan Cup on the line against the Orange. On Sunday (April 30), the Terriers take on No. 6 Dartmouth in a battle for the Bill Cup against the Big Green.
The Terriers take part in their first races since the weekend of April 8-9. BU's Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 battled Stanford, Cal, and Wisconsin in the Pac-12 Challenge, with the 2V8 snagging a victory over the Badgers in a time of 5:52.9 on the final day of competition. Meanwhile, BU's Third and Fourth Varsity 8 crews raced Harvard and Brown on the Charles River on April 8.
In the latest IRCA/IRA Men's Heavyweight Polls, released on April 26, BU's top-three Varsity 8 crews were ranked inside the top 15. The V8 remained 13th, behind Penn and ahead of Cornell. The 2V8 checked in at 12th, trailing the Quakers but polling in front of Navy. The 3V8 has the highest ranking of the three boats at 11th. In the IRA Ten Eyck Team Points ranking, BU is 11th with 154 points.
Dartmouth enters the weekend fresh off an Atalanta Cup victory in the V8 over Ivy League rival Brown on April 22. The V8 crossed the line in a time of 5:44.39 at Lake Morey. The Big Green won their spring opener over MIT and Holy Cross, and had a 2V8 triumph over defending national runner-up Yale on April 8. Dartmouth is fourth in the Ten Eyck standings.
Georgetown hits the water for the first time in two weeks. In their last competition, the Hoyas participated in the Healy Cup against Holy Cross, Temple, and Marist, winning the V8 race in 5:47.20 and capturing third in the 2V8.
Syracuse, slotting fifth in the Ten Eyck rankings, recently collected its third-consecutive Goes Trophy with wins over No. 12 Cornell and No. 21 Navy two weeks ago. The Orange clocked in at 5:33.8 in the V8, and was victorious in the 2V8 and 3V8 to retain the Stagg Trophy.
The Bill Cup is named after Edwin Bill, who was an oarsman at Dartmouth College and the University of Wisconsin. The series dates back to 1941 but was interrupted by World War II and did not resume until 1964. BU and Dartmouth have each won 21 races, with the Terriers' last victory coming in 2019. The Big Green took last year's cup race with a winning time of 5:46.4.
The Conlan Cup between BU and Syracuse is named after the founder of Boston University men's rowing, Jim Conlan, who started the program as a student in 1937. The Terriers' last win in the rivalry also came in 2019, while the Orange were victorious in last year's matchup, sporting a 34-20 lead in the series.
This weekend is the last in the cup series for BU this spring. Following the Lake Morey Invite, the Terriers compete in the Eastern Sprints on Sunday (May 14) at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
