Women’s Rowing Wins Two Petite Finals At Eastern Sprints

April 30, 2023

WORCESTER, Mass. – Two victories in the Petite Finals highlighted the Boston University women's rowing program's time at the 2023 Eastern Sprints, held on Sunday (April 30) on Lake Quinsigamond.

BU launched five entries in the regatta, all of which reached either the Petite or Grand Final. The Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 "A" crews captured first place in the Petite Finals, while the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 "B" crews advanced to the Grand Finals.

The V8, coxed by Trisha Jaggi and stroked by Sofia Suhinin, finished third in the first heat on Sunday morning in a time of 6:30.290, behind eventual Grand Final-winner Brown and Northeastern. In a Petite Final that featured plenty of overlap between the six competitors, the Terriers fended off Drexel in the final 1,000 meters, gaining water in the home stretch to cross the line in 6:31.030, under three seconds ahead of the Dragons.

After a second-place heat performance in a time of 6:40.560 to finish only behind Syracuse, the 2V8, coxed by Audrey Lucerne and stroked by Tiare Hicks, clocked in at 6:48.410 in the Grand Final, good for sixth place.

In the Third Varsity 8, the Terriers, coxed by Maya Wiisanen and stroked by Abby Berg, placed third in their heat in 6:53.010, trailing Brown and Michigan State. The bronze also went to BU in the Petite Final, holding off Cornell to finish in 7:04.370, behind Dartmouth and Drexel.

BU's Varsity 4 "A" crew, coxed by Kennedy Walker and stroked by Luisa Reussner, placed third in its morning heat with a time of 7:27.500. In the Petite Final, after holding a slim lead of a couple seats throughout the race, pulled away in the final 500 meters for the victory, clocking in at 7:26.430. Rhode Island was second in 7:31.090.

The Terriers' Varsity 4 "B" boat, coxed by Valeria Lizarraga Ramirez and stroked by Sophie Ehrhardt, qualified for the Petite Final thanks to a 7:40.840 effort in the second heat. The crew went on to place sixth in a time of 7:47.490.

BU turns its attention to its Patriot League title defense, with the Patriot League Championship next on the schedule on Friday (May 12) at Lake Quinsigamond.
