BUFHA Spring Recap
June 12, 2023 | Field Hockey
BOSTON – With a focus on building a foundation for the upcoming 2023 season, the Boston University field hockey team had a five-date spring season with competition against regional rivals Boston College, Northeastern, Harvard, New Hampshire, Maine and Holy Cross.
Pictured above, the Terriers continued the tradition of teaming up with Boston College for the annual Walk MS at Nickerson Field before facing off later in the afternoon.
"I was really pleased with the progress of the team through the spring," said head coach Sally Starr. "With our practice situation due to renovations, we were only able to use about a third of the field but I think from our first game on we got better and better in all aspects.
"We tried to keep them focused on improving on outletting, pressing and playing with pace. There was definitely an emphasis on thinking fast and playing fast. I think it gave us a tremendous foundation, which is exactly what you want in the spring to springboard you into the fall season."
Awards Dinner
The 2022 team gathered one final time for a dinner and awards ceremony at The Stockyard in April.
Highlighted by the traditional senior speeches, the evening celebrated a 2022 season that included a Patriot League regular-season title, a runner-up finish in the league tournament, and numerous awards.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly received the Most Valuable Player Award for her stellar season which saw her finish fourth in the nation in save percentage (.795).
The Most Improved Player Award went to junior Tess Csejka, who had a breakout season, leading the team in both goals (10) and points (21).
Junior Thalia Steenssens was the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award for her terrific two-way play while the Erin Prediger BUFHA Spirit Award was given to two Terriers – graduate student Casey Thompson and freshman Amalia Preece.
Commencement and GPA

The Class of 2023 took part in BU's historic 150th Commencement on May 21 in front of a crowd of 23,000 at Nickerson Field. BUFHA sends the best of wishes to Mikayla Crowley, Ellie McIntyre and Caroline Kelly on their future endeavors. Rachel Borzymowski will be staying for one more semester to compete for a fifth year.
The team once again turned in an impressive semester in the classroom, combining for a 3.41 grade-point average. Borzymowski, Crowley and sophomore Tegan Poerio led the way, each earning a perfect 4.0 GPA.
