Cade Webber of the Boston University men's ice hockey team has signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the organization announced on Thursday.
The Maple Leafs acquired the rights to Webber in March via a trade with Carolina, the franchise that drafted Webber in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Webber is with the team in Boston as they prepare to begin the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday against the Bruins.
Webber enjoyed a fantastic four-year career at BU, highlighted by a record-setting season in 2023-24. He set a new single-season NCAA record with 133 blocked shots en route to being named Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman. He also recorded a career-high six assists, matched his career high with six points and was a career-best plus-15 this past season. He averaged an incredible 3.50 blocks per game, including seven at Providence the night he set the NCAA single-season record, and six against Minnesota in the NCAA Sioux Falls Regional final.
A native of Meadville, Pennsylvania, Webber helped BU win the 2022 Beanpot, the 2023 Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles, and was instrumental in leading the Terriers to back-to-back Frozen Fours as an assistant captain. Webber finished his career as a plus-35 with 16 points (1g, 15a) and an impressive 298 blocked shots.Â
