No. 20/22 Softball Finishes PL Play Undefeated for the First Time with 2-0 Senior Day Win over Lehigh
May 4, 2024 | Softball
BOSTON – Helped by graduate student Lizzy Avery's six strikeouts and senior Kate Pryor's two RBIs, the No. 20/22 nationally-ranked Boston University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a 2-0 regular-season ending victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon.
With the series sweep over the Mountain Hawks (30-18, 14-4 PL), the Terriers (49-4-1, 18-0 PL) become the third-ever Patriot League program to finish undefeated atop the standings, joining Lehigh's 2005 squad (18-0) and Army West Point's 1992 team (12-0). BU also secured its second-ever perfect conference mark after posting an 8-0 record in 1993 as a member of the America East (then known as the North Atlantic Conference).
Allowing just three hits, Avery is only the third pitcher this season in 48 contests and first since Feb. 23 to blank Lehigh. Senior right fielder Lauren Nett played a key role in preserving the Terriers' NCAA leading 26th shutout of the year, as she threw out Emily Cimino trying to score from second on a sixth-inning single. Nett also made a stellar diving catch to help Avery retire the side in the seventh for her third solo shutout.
At the plate, Pryor broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI single in the fourth and later added an RBI sac fly to plate graduate student Alison Boaz, who tripled to right center in the sixth with one out.
Riding a 35-game home unbeaten streak, BU will next host the Patriot League tournament as the top seed on May 9-11. The Terriers will open against the No. 4 Black Knights on Thursday (May 9) with a 12 p.m. first pitch. No. 2 Lehigh and No. 3 Bucknell will face off in the second game that day.
