Lightweight Rowing Coaching Staff Earns CRCA Regional Honors
June 10, 2024 | Women's Lightweight Rowing
WILMINGTON, Del. – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has highlighted Boston University lightweight rowing in its annual regional awards, the organization announced on Monday (June 10).
Head Coach Mary Foster was selected as a co-recipient of the CRCA Lightweight Regional Coach of the Year award. She and Assistant Coach Elizabeth Hughes were tabbed as the Lightweight Regional Staff of the Year. Foster shares the Regional Coach of the Year honor with Princeton's Paul Rassam.
BU captures both CRCA regional awards for the second-straight year after former head coach and current Director of Women's Rowing Malcolm Doldron received the honor in June 2023. Doldron and staff went on to receive the CRCA's national coach and staff of the year awards later that month.
Regional awards are voted on by the membership of the CRCA. The Regional Coach of the Year Award is intended to recognize a head coach that fits one or more of the following criteria: outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach. The Staff of the Year Award is intended to recognize those whose teams have had outstanding success throughout the current season and have demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as coaches.
Foster and staff recently completed the 2023-24 campaign with a third-place team result at the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta. In her first season at the helm, Foster helped guide double sculls duo Kylie Lough and Caroline Burchette to a national title, the fourth in program history in the entry. In addition, the Lightweight 4 received silver in the Grand Final at the IRA Championship for the first time since 2021.
Outside of the IRA Championship, BU captured the Konrad Ulbrich Team Trophy to win the Eastern Sprints back in May, winning the Lightweight Double and Four races while the Eight was third. The Lightweight 8 was also victorious at the Knecht Cup in April for the second-consecutive year in retaining the Danielle Kousoulis Memorial Trophy. Back in the fall, BU's Lightweight Championship 8 placed second in the event for the first time since 2017.
Following the end of the spring season, four Terriers were named CRCA Scholar-Athletes: seniors Rayna Kuthiala and Nina Palmer, and juniors Heather Shinn and Lulu Smith. Senior Maecy Rickman garnered CRCA All-American status as well for the first time in her career.
