BOSTON – Five student-athletes have been selected to Boston University's Scarlet Key Class of 2025 in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.
The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.
Malcolm Chimezie (men's basketball),
Nina Gulbransen (women's tennis),
Tyler Johnson (men's soccer),
Stella Langenbach (women's swimming & diving) and
Tyesha Williams (softball) were honored in a tapping ceremony Sunday morning on the 17th floor of the Center for Computing & Data Sciences as part of the University's Alumni Weekend. They will officially receive the prestigious award in May.
Named a captain for the upcoming men's basketball season, Chimezie (Yonkers, New York) has been a member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy since his sophomore year. Even though he has dealt with multiple injuries during his career, he has maintained a positive outlook and fully immersed himself in the BU community. Serving as event coordinator for the Student-Athletes of Color organization, he was just one of two Patriot League representatives to be chosen to attend the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum this past April. As a sociology major, he previously completed an internship with the Harvard Public Health & Air Safety program and also participated in multiple community service activities while at BU, including Team IMPACT and Dorchester Boys & Girls Club. On the court, Chimezie appeared in eight contests this past season, tallying a career-high 17 points against VTSU-Johnson and later posting a season-high eight rebounds with eight points at UAlbany. He previously appeared in 30 contests as a freshman to help BU reach the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational and later made five starts his sophomore season, hauling in 11 rebounds at Colgate and eight boards at Notre Dame.
A team captain for women's tennis, Gulbransen (Boca Raton, Florida) is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and ITA Scholar-Athlete award recipient. She was also named to the CSC Academic All-District Team this past spring. Pursuing both bachelor's and master's degrees in political science, she spent the summer as a Congressional intern for U.S. Representative Seth Moulton (MA) and is currently working as an intern with the City of Boston Mayor's commission for persons with disabilities and in the Boston Parks and Recreation division. Responsibilities included her visiting and cataloging over 100 parks in Boston to make them more accessible to the disabled community. A member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy, she previously served as a fellow for "Her Bold Move" where she helped to bolster the campaigns of female and LGBTQIA+ candidates. She also worked with The Borgen Project, where she mobilized college students to engage in civic life on behalf of impoverished and disadvantaged women and children. On the court, she has helped women's tennis reach three consecutive PL tournament finals, highlighted by a championship victory in 2023.
Johnson (Miami, Florida) has been one of the most engaged student-athletes on campus during his time at BU. A member of the men's soccer team, he was elected president of the Student-Athletes of Color at the end of his freshman year and served in the role for two years. Though his leadership, SAOC developed partnerships with other campus organizations, including Sabor Latino, and other Boston-area student-athletes of color groups, while also expanding the executive board to 20 members, giving more opportunities to other student-athletes to use their platforms to create change. This past April, his commitment to building inclusive spaces and advocating for student-athlete needs led to his selection as BU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) co-president, Chair of the Patriot League SAAC and the PL representative to the NCAA Division I SAAC. Majoring in broadcast journalism, he has also spent time with BUTV10, creating a show "Live with TY" that spotlights student-athletes and their inspiring stories. Unable to take the field last season due to injury, he has helped men's soccer claim five shutouts, including a 1-0 victory at then-No. 9 New Hampshire in 2022.
Langenbach (Dubai, United Arab Emirates), who is set to complete her undergraduate degree from the Questrom School of Business in just three years, has successfully managed multiple commitments across the BU community. The recipient of the Hardest Worker Award and the Strength & Conditioning Award at the team's 2023-24 banquet, Langenbach led off the 400 free relay that tied for the highest finish ever at the Patriot League Championships and she placed fifth in the 100 freestyle to move into the top-10 all-time in program history. She has worked with the BU Consulting Group Strategy Lab and participated in the Bloom Family Leadership Academy while also working as a swim instructor at the Fitness & Recreation Center and completing multiple internships in Europe the past two summers. Born and raised in Germany and the United Arab Emirates, Langenbach is a member of the Third Culture Club, an organization for student from multiple backgrounds. Recently, she was the only third-year member of the swimming & diving team to be named a captain for the 2024-25 season.
Williams (Hampstead, North Carolina) has been a contributor on a softball team that has posted a combined 145-33-1 (.813) record over the last three years while claiming three PL regular season titles alongside two automatic NCAA berths. Named team captain for the upcoming spring campaign, she has been an advocate for making a difference and creating a better experience for people of color at BU. She is the current president of the Student-Athletes of Color organization and was recently selected to represent the Department of Athletics at BU President Gilliam's inauguration gala last week. Majoring in political science on the pre-law track with a minor in deaf studies, Williams participated in a summer internship at the New Hanover & Pender County District Attorney's office, where she was able to work on both misdemeanor and felony cases. She's volunteered her time with a softball clinic at her high school while also participating in an elementary school reading program. Softball highlights include an eighth-inning, two-out RBI single in a 1-0 win at UConn last March and batting a combined 4-for-5 in a doubleheader sweep over Merrimack his sophomore season.
