
Women's Basketball Upended at Maine, 54-45

ORONO, Maine – Starting off the month of December, the Boston University women's basketball dropped a 54-45 decision at Maine Monday night.
The Black Bears (3-5) held a four-point halftime lead and outscored the Terriers (3-5) by 10 in the third quarter to create distance between the two former America East rivals. BU tried to mount a rally, cutting the deficit to six in the fourth at 4:31, but was unable to sustain it in defeat.
Two Terriers finished in double figures with sophomore Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir tallying a team-high 11 points and classmate Allison Schwertner adding 10 points alongside a team-high six rebounds. Audrey Erickson recorded four assists with a block and steal. BU finished the contest shooting 40.5 percent from the field and held Maine to 33.3 FG%, but the Black Bears posted a 20-11 advantage in points off turnovers with a 16-4 lead in second chance opportunities.
For the Black Bears, Adrianna Smith claimed a double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Sarah Talon also scored in double digits at 12 points while adding four steals to help force 21 turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gunnsteinsdóttir drove to the hoop for a layup that gave BU a 9-8 lead with 3:42 left in the opening quarter, but the Black Bears ended the frame on a 6-0 run to grab a 14-9 lead.
- Maine built a 21-13 lead midway through the second quarter but the Terriers put together a 7-0 run to get within one at 21-20 thanks to an Erickson triple and back-to-back layups by Schwertner.
- The Black Bears responded with a 3-pointer of their own to create a 24-20 halftime score.
- Maine led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, but the Terriers never quit and mounted a comeback attempt in the final minutes.
- The rally began with back-to-back 3-pointers from Rose Azmoudeh to make it a 44-34 game before a Schwertner bucket brought BU within eight.
- Maine answered with a layup of its own, but Schwertner knocked down two free throws and added another layup to make it 46-40 with 4:51 left.
- That was as close as BU got, however, as the Black Bears pulled away in the final minutes to secure the victory.
- BU will next visit No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday (Dec. 7) at 12 p.m.
