BOSTON - For the 29th year in a row, Boston University's Department of Athletics brought the joy of reading to local classrooms through its beloved Holiday Reading Program.
On December 11 & 12, more than 200 Terrier student-athletes and staff visited six Boston Public Schools across Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, Roxbury and the South End. Together with BU's Government and Community Affairs Department, the athletes read aloud to elementary students, sparking excitement and curiosity through stories.
Every child left with a brand-new book purchased by BU, while each classroom received an additional title for the teacher's permanent library—ensuring the gift of reading continues long after the holidays.
This year's program reached over 700 children, with visits to:
- Hurley K-8 (South End) and Mason Elementary (Roxbury) on Dec. 11
- Baldwin Pilot Academy (Brighton), Trotter Elementary (Dorchester), Horace Mann School for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, and Gardner Pilot Academy (Allston) on Dec. 12
Nearly three decades in, the Holiday Reading Program remains a cherished BU tradition, one that celebrates community, literacy and the power of student-athletes to inspire the next generation.
