Women's Basketball Falls to Navy in PL Opener, 77-64

BOSTON – Seniors Anete Adler and Anastasiia Semenova combined for 33 points, but the Boston University women's basketball dropped its Patriot League opener to preseason favorite Navy, 77-64, on Wednesday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Midshipmen (7-5, 1-0 PL) never trailed in the contest, breaking an early 4-4 tie with a 23-8 extended run and never let the Terriers (4-8, 0-1 PL) within single digits again.
Adler dropped a season-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field while adding a game-best eight rebounds, matching her career high. Semenova's 10 points off the bench marked a season high.
Zanai Barnett-Gay led Navy with 18 points, five assists and five rebounds. Zoe Mesuch and Kate Samson each tallied 17 and 16 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Adler scored six of BU's first eight points, including a layup while drawing contact to bring BU within 9-8 just four minutes into the contest.
- However, Navy executed a 13-2 extended run over nearly five minutes thanks to a trio of three-pointers to stage a 22-10 advantage.
- Barnett-Gay's three-pointer at the 8:48 mark in the second quarter handed the Midshipmen their largest lead of the first half, 30-13.
- Junior Inés Monteagudo Pardo canned a corner three, then classmate Aoibhe Gormley found Adler in transition for a layup to slice the gap to 12 one minute later.
- Semenova scored eight points in the second quarter, including a second-chance layup on the left block to make it a 41-29 contest in Navy's favor at halftime.
- Adler and sophomore Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir converted on layups within the first 2:11 of the third quarter to pull within 43-33, but the Mids countered with another 13-2 burst over the next three-plus minutes to take a 56-35 lead.
- Samson sandwiched Barnett-Gay's steal and layup to start the fourth quarter and widen the Navy advantage to 71-47 with 7:51 left in regulation.
- Junior Audrey Ericksen knocked down a straightaway three-pointer before sophomore Allison Schwertner stuck a layup from classmate Taylor Williams' pass with 2:32 to play. Williams put back her own miss in the final seconds to close the game.
- BU shot over 48 percent from the field, including 24-for-45 (53.3 percent) inside the arc.
- Navy made over 43 percent of its shots and sank nine three-pointers, with five coming in the first quarter.
- Rebounds favored the Terriers, 39-30.
- Ericksen led BU with five assists.
- The Terriers outscored Navy in the paint, 42-30.
- The Mids boasted a 30-5 edge in points off turnovers as BU surrendered 21 giveaways.
- Adler recorded her third-career 20-point outing, falling one shy of her personal best from Feb. 22 against American.
- Semenova scored in double figures for the first time since a 14-point outing in the Patriot League quarterfinals against Army West Point on March 11, 2024.
- Gormley as well as sophomore Inez Gallegos made their season debuts. Gormley finished with four assists and two steals while Gallegos supplied five points.
- Junior Sisi Bentley also returned for the first time since Nov. 26.
- BU has collected 27 offensive rebounds and 87 total boards in its last two games.
- Navy extends its margin to 13-11 all-time against the Terriers.
- BU travels to American for its Patriot League road opener on Saturday (Jan. 3). Opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.
