BU Athletics Unveils Women's Ice Hockey Renovations at Walter Brown Arena
February 28, 2025 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The Boston University Department of Athletics recently completed one of the most significant renovations in its history with entirely new team spaces for the women's ice hockey program at Walter Brown Arena in the Case Center.
Thanks in large part to a substantial gift from Larry (ENG'99) and Debi (ENG'99) DePaulis, the transformation took place over the past nine months by a project team including Commodore Builders and Perkins & Will.
Highlighted by a 2,740-square foot locker room and adjacent lounge and recovery area, the project included a full office suite for the team staff, an athletic training room, a hydrotherapy room, an equipment room and four visiting locker rooms. The entrance to the arena underwent a full renovation and a 360-degree videoboard was installed above center ice.
The new locker room is nearly double the size of the program's previous one with a 9-foot ceiling and includes 27 custom-built Hollman lockers that are all mechanically ventilated. It features a recessed-lighted BU logo on the ceiling, an 86" smart TV and Bluetooth audio.
A nutrition area with counter space and refrigerators is on one end of the lounge with a study area on the other end. In between includes a large sectional, two more 86" smart TVs, one-way views into the arena, writable glass red accent walls, and lounge seating for Normatec and other recovery resources.
A street locker room is connected to the lounge and locker room via an internal suite stair and includes 27 custom lockers for street wear and personal belongings, including a lockable internal area with power outlets for phone and device charging along with a separate shower and bathroom space.
The fully renovated athletic training space was relocated within Walter Brown Arena to be closer to the new team space and includes a workspace, training tables, storage and a TV. The adjacent hydrotherapy room features two Grimm CRYOTherm hot/cold convertible tubs.
The new team office space is on the lower floor and it is more than double the previous office space with a conference area including a custom glass table with arena replica artwork. Equipment spaces were expanded and reimagined to increase storage as well as add laundry facilities at ice level.
Other ice-level enhancements include a new coaches' locker room with custom lockers, smart TV, and individual shower/bathroom spaces and four fully renovated visiting locker rooms with adjacent wet spaces. A new skate rental shop, figure skating locker room and club hockey storage space was also part of the project.
A Daktronics center-hung 360-degree videoboard with 3.9mm pixel display is the most significant addition for the fan experience along with a new fixed-digit scoreboard on the south end of the arena. A Lumenpulse full-color LED light system was also installed.
The enhanced arena entrance connects the Case Center lobby to the Walter Brown Arena balcony and has new flooring an a glass railing. BU partnered with Advent for the project branding and the entrance now includes a lighted arched BOSTON display. Displays in both private and public spaces celebrate the program's history and also highlight the accomplishments of former players in the Olympics and professional leagues.
The team moved into the locker room in late January and officially returned to Walter Brown Arena for its Jan. 25 game against Holy Cross after playing its home games at Agganis Arena during the fall semester.
