Terriers’ Win Streak Ends After 63-58 Loss to Leopards

EASTON, Pa. – Freshman Allison Schwertner scored a team high 15 points and junior Anete Adler posted her first collegiate double-double, but the Boston University women's basketball program fell to Lafayette, 63-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Kirby Athletic Center.

BU (11-17, 5-12 PL) led by as many as seven points in the second half. However, the Leopards (8-20, 5-12 PL) shot nearly 59 percent in the final 20 minutes and utilized a 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter to help secure the regular season sweep over the Terriers.

With Loyola Maryland's loss to Navy earlier in the day, both BU and Lafayette have secured top-8 seeds in the looming Patriot League Tournament and will each host its first round game.

Schwertner made 50 percent of her shots and tied for the team lead with three assists. Adler notched 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Alex Giannaros scored 12 points while sophomore Sisi Bentley collected 11 points and eight rebounds, seven on the offensive glass.

Teresa Kiewiet led all scorers with 19 points on seven baskets. Abby Antognoli registered 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Sauda Ntaconayigize also dropped 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU missed eight of its first 10 shots, allowing Lafayette to build a 7-4 lead following Kiewiet's right-wing three-pointer just 4:22 into the game.
  • Schwertner and Bentley combined for a trio of layups for a 6-0 Terrier run that gave them a two-point lead before Kiewiet's layup leveled the score at 14-14 after one quarter.
  • Sophomore Audrey Ericksen converted a layup after Bentley intercepted Lafayette during the press to hand BU a 19-16 edge, but the Leopards ripped off a 12-2 run over three-minute span to take a 28-21 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • From there, the Terriers held the Leopards scoreless until halftime. Adler cashed in a pair of layups, and Giannaros' driving attack to the rim with 1:29 on the clock knotted the game at 28-28.
  • That stretch expanded to 16-3 for nearly nine minutes after BU scored the first nine points of the third quarter for a 35-28 advantage, capped with Bentley's baseline jumper.
  • Ntaconayigize hit a pair of three-pointers to help Lafayette pull within one, 40-39, with five minutes remaining in the stanza.
  • Adler and Schwertner teamed up for BU's final six points of the third to help BU sport a 46-45 lead heading into the final frame.
  • Giannaros found Bentley on the right block for a layup to ignite the fourth quarter, but Lafayette countered with an 8-0 run across four minutes to regain the lead, 53-48 with five minutes to play in regulation.
  • Schwertner halted the spurt after Ericksen connected with her for a layup, but the Leopards later extended the lead to 59-52 on a pair of Antognoli baskets and Talia Zurinskas' driving layup.
  • Giannaros' jumper as the clock read 2:02, followed by free throws from Schwertner and Bentley, brought the Terriers within 59-56 with 1:04 to play, but Kiewiet nailed a fadeaway jumper by the foul line on the next possession to help seal the result.
STATS
  • BU made 41.7 percent of its shots (25-for-60) and took just eight three-point attempts.
  • Lafayette connected on over 53 percent of its shots from field.
  • BU sported a 37-24 edge in rebounds, including a 16-3 mark on the offensive glass. That translated into 10 second- chance Terrier points.
  • Point paints also favored BU, 42-28.
  • The Terriers generated 16 assists on their made baskets.
NOTES
  • Schwertner notched her 10th game this season with 10-plus points. It marked the eighth time she led the Terriers in scoring this year.
  • Giannaros leaped from ninth to a tie for seventh place on BU's all-time scoring list, joining Julie Schmidt '95 with 1,346 career points.
  • Adler joins Schwertner as the two Terriers with a double-double in the 2024-25 campaign.
  • Bentley's seven offensive rebounds are the most by a Terrier this season as she registered her fourth game in double figures this season.
  • BU remains ahead in the all-time series, 22-12, though Lafayette sweeps the regular season series for the first time since 2018.
UP NEXT
  • BU wraps the 2024-25 regular season at Navy on Wednesday, March 5. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
  • The Terriers would secure the 7-seed with a win plus a Lafayette loss to Loyola Maryland. BU would be the 8-seed in any other scenario.
