Softball Celebrates Senior Day With Doubleheader Sweep Over Lafayette

BOSTON – After recognizing senior captains Sydney Pecoraro and Tyesha Williams, the Boston University softball team more than tripled Lafayette in hits to claim a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon.

With a 19-6 advantage in hits against the Leopards (7-30, 5-12 PL), the Terriers improve to 35-17 and 13-4 in Patriot League play. Junior Kasey Ricard (23-10) totaled five strikeouts in the 9-1 (6) game one victory, and freshman Danika Nell (7-1) earned six strikeouts for her fourth solo shutout of the season in a 5-0 decision.

At the plate, the underclassmen led the way with sophomores Kyomi Apalit, Kylie Doherty and Libby Walsh all collecting three hits apiece in the DH alongside freshman Camryn Lyons. Freshman Kieren McHugh came off the bench in both contests to deliver a combined three RBIs off a pair of pinch hits.

GAME 1: BU - 9, Lafayette - 1 ( 6 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Lafayette opened the game with a one-out single, Ricard struck out two Leopards to keep the game scoreless.
Junior Brooke Deppiesse duplicated Lafayette's efforts with a one-out hit in the first and reached second for her team-leading 14th double, but the Leopards were able to turn a double play by catching a liner in right and throwing Deppiesse out at third.
Lyons helped open the scoring in the bottom of the second with a lead-off double to right center that eventually led to her scoring the go-ahead run on Apalit's RBI bunt single.
Shortly thereafter, sophomore Sophie Naivar scored on an errant throw toward second during Walsh's successful stolen base attempt, and McHugh then drove a 1-1 pitch to left center for a two-out RBI double and 3-0 lead.
The Leopards jumped on the scoreboard with a lead-off single in the fourth and a one-out RBI double but were unable to move closer, as Ricard prevented further damage with a fly out and strikeout.
In the bottom half, BU scored three runs off three hits and two Lafayette errors with both sophomore Livia Christopher and Doherty hitting back-to-back RBI singles to center.
Two innings later, the Terriers scored three more runs to put the game away with Deppiesse earning a one-out, two-RBI double and scoring on a walk-off wild pitch.

GAME 2: BU - 5, Lafayette - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

Nell and Parker Rowden (2-10) dueled through 3 1/2 scoreless innings before the Terriers broke the deadlock with three runs off three hits and two errors.
With both Lyons and Naivar in scoring position, McHugh delivered a two-RBI single and was replaced at second by Apalit, who scored on Walsh's RBI double to left for the 3-0 lead.
Lafayette earned a one-out double in the top of the sixth, but Nell ended the threat with a ground out and infield pop up to Walsh at second.
During the bottom half, Apalit doubled to left center with one out and scored on Walsh's third homer of the season to push the lead to 5-0.
After allowing a two-out walk, Nell sealed the shutout on a pop up to Apalit at third.
