Softball Ends Regular Season With 5-0 Victory Over Lafayette
May 4, 2025 | Softball
BOSTON – Wrapping up the regular season and the home schedule, the Boston University softball team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Lafayette Sunday afternoon.
With the three-game sweep against the Leopards (7-31, 5-13 PL), the Terriers (36-17, 14-4 PL) reach 36+ wins for the seventh straight season under head coach Ashley Waters and clinch the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Patriot League tournament hosted by top-seeded Army West Point (16-2 PL) on May 8-10. BU will start off against No. 3 Lehigh (13-5 PL), and the Black Knights will face No. 4 Bucknell (8-10 PL) in the opening round of the double-elimination event.
Sophomore Kylie Doherty and junior Brooke Deppiesse combined in the top two slots of the batting lineup at 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Sophie Naivar also earned a pair of hits, and junior Megan Coyle delivered an RBI sac fly.
In the circle, junior Kasey Ricard (24-10) pitched six scoreless innings with five strikeouts against four hits and just one walked allowed. Freshman Danika Nell sealed the Terriers' 14th shutout of the season by quickly retiring the three Leopards she faced in the top of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Leopards' Mary Grace O'Neill led off with a hit-by-pitch and quickly stole second but was then shortly thereafter tagged out during another attempt by sophomore Kyomi Apalit on a perfect throw from classmate Livia Christopher toward third base.
- Deppiesse earned a one-out single and a stolen base in the bottom of the first but was stranded at second after the Leopards earned a line out to first.
- Sophomore Libby Walsh drew a one-out walk in the second but was thrown out trying to reach third from first on Naivar's single to right field.
- Doherty broke the scoreless deadlock by launching a 1-0 pitch toward right center in the third with one out for her 13th home run, one shy of the program record set in 2007 by Chiya Louie ('07).
- Trying to score the equalizer, Lafayette had a one-out and two-out single to put two on base in the fourth before Ricard ended the threat on an infield pop up to short.
- The Terriers pulled away in the fifth with four runs off three hits and two Lafayette errors, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from Doherty and Deppiesse.
- After Coyle extended the lead to 5-0 on an RBI sac fly, Ricard earned a quick 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, and Nell duplicated those efforts in the seventh to help BU improve to 34-0 all-time in the series.
- In a rematch of last year's PL title game that saw BU repeat as champions with a 1-0 (8) victory, the Terriers will meet Lehigh for the first time ever in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday (May 8) at a time still to be determined.
- The contest will also mark the first time the two conference rivals will meet on a neutral field since BU won both games as the America East champion against the Mountain Hawks in the 1996 NCAA play-in round hosted by Harvard.
