CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Boston University men's rowing program opened up its tenure at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Friday, May 30 on the Cooper River.
BU saw two crews advance to the AB Semifinals set for Saturday, May 31 in the Second and Third Varsity 8 boats. The Varsity 8+ reached the CD Semifinal, while the Varsity 4+ won its semifinal race to slot into the D Final.
A humid morning saw temperatures reach 70 degrees by the afternoon, with overcast conditions occupying the skies in the morning.
BU's Varsity 8+, coxed by
Emily Slawin and stroked by
George Kreidler, started the morning with the final heat against Princeton, Dartmouth, Wisconsin, Navy and Holy Cross. The Tigers and Big Green quickly established leads for the top two spots, leaving the Terriers, Midshipmen and Badgers to contend for third. The Terriers gained a couple seats on Wisconsin after the Badgers got out in front, but Navy rode a furious pace in the final 500 meters to the third-place finish, leaving Wisconsin in fourth and BU in fifth at 5:41.310. The margin between those three crews was just 1.8 seconds.
The Terrier Second Varsity 8+, coxed by
James Smith and stroked by
Filippo de Marsanich, was briefly delayed following a start issue that impacted Wisconsin's boat. Racing against the Badgers, Oregon State, Princeton, Dartmouth and Holy Cross, BU executed a solid start to move into third behind the Tigers and Big Green, who gained open water separation by the course's midpoint. The Terriers fended off Wisconsin by one length and even closed the gap with runner-up Dartmouth by one length, completing the course in 5:46.210 to slot third and advance to the AB Semifinal.
In the Third Varsity 8+, coxed by
Hannah Noguchi and stroked by
Wynant Hubbard, BU built an early advantage over Oregon State and La Salle to settle into third behind Harvard and Penn. Each of those crews gradually increased their leads against the trailing boats to open water, allowing BU to reach the AB Semifinal for a third-place result in 5:55.530, nearly eight seconds ahead of the fourth-place Beavers.
BU's Varsity 4+, coxed by
Luke Stroh and stroked by
Mason Laundry, posted a 6:18.702 in the time trials to earn a spot in the second DE Semifinal, competing against Coast Guard, Williams, Colgate, Tufts and Holy Cross. In a race that featured four crews within a length of each other halfway down the course, the Terriers broke through with 700 meters to go and crossed the finish first in 6:35.080 with about half a length of open water in front of second-place Coast Guard.
Due to anticipated rain and overnight flooding, the IRA and IRCA pushed back Saturday's races by four hours. The day begins at Noon, with BU's first race at 12:56 p.m.
