Vera Sjöberg before the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships

Sjöberg Ready for NCAA Outdoor Championships

June 11, 2025

EUGENE, Ore. — Junior Vera Sjöberg of the Boston University women's track & field team is set to begin her campaign at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday, June 12 at historic Hayward Field.

Sjöberg will compete in two events, the 1500m and the 5000m, with the 1500m semifinal kicking off at 7:21 p.m. ET on Thursday, live on ESPN and ESPN+. Sjöberg is in heat two and will need to either record a top-five finish in her heat or be one of the next two fastest times after both heats conclude to advance to the 1500m final.

If she qualifies for the 1500m final, that would be at 9:21 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 14, and her 5000m final will take place at 10:55 p.m. ET on Saturday, both live on ESPN 2 and ESPN+.

Sjöberg has had a record-setting outdoor season for the Terriers, breaking both the 1500m and 5000m records. She ran a record time of 4:07.39 in the NCAA East First Rounds 1500m quarterfinal to place fifth in the event and qualify for the NCAA Championships.

In the 5000m at the NCAA East First Rounds, Sjöberg broke her own school record with a 15:27.51 time, placing fourth in the qualifying event.

This is the Stockholm, Sweden native's first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and it will conclude a stellar year for Sjöberg. She finished 42nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and took eighth place in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning First Team All-America status.

The five-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year — who will graduate from BU with a degree in English in August of this year — will be the first BU or Patriot League woman to race in multiple events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She is the first 5000m runner since Rosa Moriello ran the event in 2014 and the first 1500m competitor since Rachel Felton in 2001.
