O'Brien Hat Trick Leads Terriers to 3-0 Victory Over Bryant

BOSTON - Senior Caroline O'Brien accounted for all the scoring, recording her third career hat trick to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Bryant on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.

Junior Sophie Ortyl picked up her second straight Sunday shutout, stopping the only shot on goal she faced to help the Terriers close out a four-game homestand with a win and improve to 3-4 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • O'Brien wasted little time getting BU on the board, opening the scoring at the 3:32 mark.
  • The senior pounced on a loose ball that had deflected off Bryant stick near the top of the circle and then dribbled around the defense on the right side before sneaking a shot under the reach of Bulldogs' netminder Maud van Lierop.
  • Van Lierop kept the Bulldogs in the game by saving the next nine shots she faced before O'Brien put the game away in the third quarter.
  • O'Brien executed a perfect give-and-go with junior Maggie Driscoll in the 35th minute, capped by a low drive to the boards from the right side for a 2-0 lead.
  • Minutes later, an entry ball from the left side by sophomore Kaitlyn Williams tipped off the stick of junior Bella Bergner towards O'Brien, who gathered it in with her back turned to the goal before drilling a reverse stick shot to the left side of the cage at 39:55.
GAME NOTES
  • O'Brien has now either scored or assisted on BU's past nine goals.
  • BU held a commanding 21-4 advantage in shots and earned seven corners to Bryant's two.
  • Van Lierop turned in a 12-save performance in goal for the Bulldogs.
  • The Terriers went 3-1 on the four-game homestand that ended on Sunday.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will return to Patriot League play on Friday (Sept. 26) when they visit Holy Cross for a Turnpike Trophy contest.
  • Game time in Worcester is set for 3 p.m.
