September 29, 2025

BOSTON – Six student-athletes have been selected to Boston University's Scarlet Key Class of 2026 in honor of their service and leadership within the BU community.

The Scarlet Key Award, one of BU's highest academic honors, acknowledges the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students who are nominated. Scarlet Key recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and are evaluated in five areas: leadership, commitment, representation, tradition and academics.

Kabran Clark (men's lacrosse), Brooke Deppiesse (softball), Haley Newman (women's swimming & diving), Amalia Preece (field hockey) Kasey Ricard (softball) and Clara Yuhn (women's ice hockey) were honored in a tapping ceremony during Alumni Weekend and will officially receive the prestigious award in May.

A native of Owings Mills, Maryland, Clark has showcased his leadership abilities since he first stepped on campus in 2022. He was selected as a freshman to represent BU at the Black Student-Athlete Summit, a national convention dedicated to providing participants actionable insights to build impactful campus programs, creating lasting support systems for student-athletes. Clark has also been heavily involved with the Bloom Family Leadership Academy and is also a member of the BU Student-Athletes of Color executive board. He also gives back to his community through his engagement with the Headstrong Foundation and Harlem Lacrosse. On the field, he scored his first collegiate goal as a freshman and overcame injuries during his sophomore year to play in seven games as a junior, including making his first career start against No. 12 Duke.

Following the graduation of 10 teammates in May 2024, Deppiesse stepped up with her best season yet in 2025 as a junior co-captain to help BU three-peat as Patriot League softball tournament champions. The Redwood City, California, native, batted a team-high and personal-best .421, which ranked 51st nationally, while adding the 58th most runs scored at 57 total. For her efforts, she claimed both PL Defensive Player of the Year and PL Tournament MVP honors alongside her third NFCA All-Region First Team award. Off the diamond, the Boston Red Sox ball attendant has served as a two-time representative to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has been involved with the Bloom Family Leadership Academy while excelling in the classroom on her way to Academic All-PL recognition.

Newman, a three-time Patriot League swimming champion, is a member of SAAC and has collaborated with the Bloom Family Leadership Initiative to implement an affinity group to specifically match first-generation student-athletes like herself within the Terrier Network Mentor Program to aid with their transition to a college environment. The Anaheim, California, native is entering her final season of what will be one of the most decorated careers in the 50-year history of the women's swimming & diving program. An All-PL First Team honoree as a freshman and junior and a second-team honoree as a sophomore, Newman has made seven PL podium appearances and holds school records in the 200 butterfly and as part of the 400 medley relay.

Preece, who has been a key contributor for the field hockey team since arriving from Chile in 2022, is a nominee for the inaugural National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Good Works Team, honoring student-athletes who go above and beyond in their commitment to community service, academic achievement and athletic performance. She has exhibited an ability to lead in diverse settings from top-tier academic symposia to grassroots healthcare volunteering across the world. Preece, who is in the Bloom Family Leadership Academy, has served in hospitals and clinics in Chile, Spain and Tanzania for experiences in radiology, anesthesiology, gynecology, surgery and cancer care.

Taking on more duties with the graduation of two elite pitchers, Ricard finished her junior campaign ranked 12th nationally in strikeouts (233) and 13th in shutouts (6) while totaling 26 wins and a 2.16 earned run average to become just the second player in league history to earn both PL Pitcher and Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades in the same season. The Littleton, Massachusetts, native reached double-digit strikeouts five times, highlighted by a personal-best 18-strikeout performance against Winthrop, to also earn her third All-Region First Team award. A co-captain and three-year SAAC member, she has spent time coaching 14U softball for youth players in her community and taken on demanding jobs at Tufts Medical Center and Fenway Park.

An assistant captain for women's ice hockey, Yuhn is a four-year starter who helped lead the Terriers to their sixth Hockey East Championship last March. The Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, native currently serves as SAAC president after taking on the role of vice president during the 2024-25 academic year. As a junior, she was also selected as cabinet director of engagement for the BU Student Government, where she led of team of 20 students by directing and mentoring them through various campus initiatives aimed at improving the student experience. She is a two-year member of the Bloom Family Leadership Academy and has served as a peer mentor through the athletic department's mentorship program. Outside the campus, she has worked closely with Headstrong, a local organization that suppress families navigating cancer treatment.
