McCarthy Named Captain as Men's Ice Hockey Finalizes 2025-26 Leadership Group

September 8, 2025

BOSTON - Boston University men's ice hockey head coach Jay Pandolfo announced on Monday that junior Gavin McCarthy will serve as the team's captain for the 2025-26 season, with junior Jack Harvey joining sophomores Cole Eiserman and Cole Hutson as assistant captains.

"I'm excited that Gavin, Jack and the Coles were voted to lead our team this season," Pandolfo said. "They have all certainly made an impact for us on the ice during their time here, but they've also set a great example of what it takes to succeed in the weight room and in the classroom. It's clear when being around them that they're all proud to be Terriers and all four of them will continue to be great representatives of the University as we once again compete for a national title."

This is the second time in the last three seasons that a McCarthy will wear the 'C' for BU, as Gavin's brother Case was captain of the 2023-24 Terrier squad that advanced to the Frozen Four. The McCarthys are the first brothers to both serve as captain at BU since Mike (2001-02) and Jay (1995-96) Pandolfo both wore the 'C' on their sweaters. This is also the second straight year that the Terriers have had a junior captain and the third straight year that a Terrier sophomore has been a part of the team's leadership group.

A native of Clarence Center, New York, McCarthy has missed just one game during his first two seasons on Comm. Ave. Last year, he set new career highs in goals (3), assists (13) and points (16) and was named to the NCAA Toledo All-Regional Team. Two of McCarthy's three goals came in title games, as he lit the lamp against Notre Dame in the Friendship Four final as well as against Boston College to help BU lift the Beanpot for a 32nd time. In 79 games, McCarthy has notched four goals and 17 assists for 21 points.

Harvey broke out as a star in the second semester of his rookie campaign and carried that strong play into a sensational sophomore season. Harvey appeared in all 40 games last year, setting new career highs in goals (11), assists (16) and points (27). He tallied two points, including a highlight-reel goal, in an 8-3 win over Ohio State in the NCAA regional semifinals before icing a 3-1 win over Penn State in the national semifinals. Harvey notched multiple points on nine different occasions as a sophomore, including a career-best three points (1g, 2a) in two different Terrier wins. He was also named to the NCAA Sioux Falls All-Regional Team in 2024.

Eiserman led all NCAA rookies with 25 goals, including four goals during the NCAA Tournament he helped lead BU to the national title game. Eiserman also scored a clutch insurance goal in the third period of the Terriers' 4-1 win over BC in the Beanpot title game. He joined Hutson on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team and finished his freshman season with 36 points (25g, 11a). Hutson was the National Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-American after he not only led all NCAA freshmen in points (48) and assists (34) but finished first among all NCAA defensemen in points and points per game (1.23). Eiserman and Hutson were also part of the United States World Junior team that won gold in January.
