March 14, 2026 | Men's Ice Hockey
STORRS, Conn. - Freshman Tynan Lawrence notched a goal and an assist but the sixth-seeded Boston University men's ice hockey team had its season come to an end after a 5-3 loss at third-seeded and No. 14 UConn in a Hockey East quarterfinal contest on Saturday afternoon at Toscano Family Ice Forum.
BU (17-17-2) and UConn (19-11-5) were tied after two periods, but UConn scored twice in a span of 1:08 to take a 4-2 lead early in the third period. Freshman Ben Merrill got BU within one at 4-3 with 10:06 to play, but the Huskies added an empty-netter to seal the result.
Freshman Jack Murtagh also lit the lamp for BU on a goal that was assisted by Lawrence and freshman Ryder Ritchie. Sophomore Mikhail Yegorov made several big stops as part of a 33-save effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UConn got on the board 6:44 into the proceedings, but BU battled all period and finished the opening 20 minutes with an 11-8 lead in shots.
- The Terriers tied the game just 1:11 into the second stanza. After Yegorov made a terrific kick save on a point-blank chance, BU got the puck out of the zone. Lawrence blocked a UConn pass in the neutral zone and then skated into the Husky end before lifting a nifty backhander over Tyler Muszelik's (29 saves) right shoulder.
- UConn answered with a power-play goal at just over two minute later to restore its one-goal edge.
- BU once again turned defense to offense to equalize with 7:25 left in the second. Freshman Charlie Trethewey blocked a shot and began the breakout, dishing the puck ahead to Ritchie. Ritchie moved it to Lawrence, who all of a sudden had a 2-on-1 with Murtagh on his left. Lawrence's shot snuck through Muszelik and Murtagh pounced on the rebound in the crease to even the score.
- The Terriers nearly took a 3-2 lead with 3:31 left in the second after a wild scramble in the UConn crease, but somehow the puck stayed out and the game remained tied heading to the third period.
- The Huskies took a 3-2 lead 2:39 into the third period and then doubled their advantage with 16:13 on the clock.
- BU got a power play shortly after the fourth UConn goal, but Hutson hit the left post on the Terriers' best look.
- Merrill brought BU within one at 9:54. He jumped on a bouncing puck at the BU blue line and created a 2-on-1 chance before scoring himself.
- BU pulled Yegorov in favor of an extra attacker with 1:41 remaining in regulation and had an offensive-zone draw with 1:06 to play, but UConn won the puck and scored with 55.7 on the clock to create the 5-3 final.
- Junior Aiden Celebrini led BU with four blocked shots and finished the year with a team-high 64 blocks.
- This was Lawrence's first multi-point of his brief collegiate career.
- BU went 0-for-3 on the power play and was 3-of-4 on the penalty kill.
- The Huskies outshot the Terriers, 38-32.
