In the 80s and 90s, the Boston University cross country team attained unparalleled success, qualifying for the NCAA Championships on many occasions, and finishing as high as third in 1985.

However, the club's initial accomplishments can be traced back to the early 50s when George Terry added to a growing list of outstanding distance runners to wear the Scarlet and White.

The first Boston University competitor to earn All-American honors in a running event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Terrry was also a two-time New England Champion, and became the second Terrier to capture the individual title at the IC4A Cross Country Championships.

During the 1955 outdoor season, Terry captured the two-mile run at the IC4A Championships, before earning All-American honors in the same event at the NCAA Championships.

He previewed his outdoor success by capturing the New England and IC4A Cross Country Championships during the fall of 1954. The year before, Johnny "The Younger" Kelley became the first Terrier to win the IC4A Cross Country title, and when Terry crossed the line in 1954, Boston University became the first school to have back-to-back champions in the history of the meet.

Terry entered the Peace Corps following graduation, and coached at St. Raphael's School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He has run the Boston Marathon of several occasions, and has placed among the top 10 finisher.

According to former track coach and current Hall of Fame member Doug Raymond, "George Terry was one of the finest athletes ever to represent Boston University."
