Softball Rallies Late to Defeat Providence, 8-7
April 8, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON – Facing a two-run deficit in the sixth inning, the Boston Univeristy softball team rallied for a 8-7 victory over Providence to conclude the nine-game homestand Wednesday afternoon.
After junior Kylie Doherty delivered a fifth-inning grand slam, senior Brooke Deppiesse put BU ahead for good with a two-RBI double in the sixth to help the Terriers (30-11) reach 30+ wins for the eighth straight season. Senior Kasey Ricard pitched the first 4.2 innings with four strikeouts against two runs allowed and then came back to retire the side in the seventh to collect her second save of the year, as the Friars dropped to 16-14.
Doherty's historic bases-clearing homer garnered her two more records, as she surpassed both the program (55) and Patriot League (56) single-season marks for RBIs while also tying the conference record for homers in a season at 16 total. Sophomore Camryn Lyons and junior Livia Christopher both collected two hits apiece with Christopher reaching home plate two times. Sophomore Kieren McHugh took advantage of a hit-by-pitch to score a run in the fifth and followed up with a sixth-inning RBI single.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ricard tallied two strikeouts during both the first and second innings, but Brianna De La Fuente was able to put the Friars on the scoreboard first with a lead-off homer in the second.
- Following a scoreless third, Julia Renny lifted a 1-1 pitch to left for a 2-0 advantage.
- Sophomore Camryn Lyons recorded BU's first two hits with a lead-off single in the second and two-out double in the fourth.
- With two outs in the top of the fifth, Providence earned a walk and single to put runners on the corners, but senior Haley Ganino came in relief to end the threat on a ground out.
- Junior Sophie Naivar helped BU stage its first rally by leading off the bottom half with a double to right, advancing to third on classmate Livia Christopher's single and scoring on a passed ball.
- BU then loaded the bases with freshman Mary Catherine Stanley earning a walk and sophomore Kieren McHugh receiving a hit-by-pitch.
- After a strikeout, Doherty launched a 2-2 pitch to right for a grand slam and 5-2 lead.
- The Friars though stormed right back in the top of the sixth with five runs off three walks and pair of hits, including an RBI walk against Ganino and then a grand slam against sophomore Danika Nell (3-4).
- BU stayed on the attack during the bottom half with Christopher singling to center, advancing to third on the Friars' throwing error and then reaching home on McHugh's RBI single to right.
- With two runners in scoring position thanks to a wild pitch, Deppiesse doubled to right center to retake the lead, 8-7.
- Ricard reentered the circle to start the seventh and sealed the one-run victory with three fly outs.
- Doherty's grand slam broke the PL's 31-year-old RBI record previously owned by Lehigh's Kim Miller ('96) and the two-year-old school record held by 2023 All-American Kayla Roncin ('24). Both Miller and Roncin earned two PL Player of the Year awards.
- Ricard earned her eighth career save and moved into a tie for third in the PL record book.
- Deppiesse moved up to second place all-time at BU with 145 career RBIs and tied for seventh in the PL. Alex Heinen ('19) owns the school record at 155 RBIs with Doherty sitting at tied for fourth at 140 RBIs.
- Prior to head coach Ashley Waters' guiding BU to its eighth consecutive 30+ win season, the Terriers had reached 30+ victories a combined 13 times over their first 28 years as a varsity program.
- BU avenged last year's 3-2 walk-off road loss to improve to 27-17-2 all-time against the Friars with an updated 15-4-1 home mark.
- BU will start off a seven-game road trip by visiting Colgate for a PL series on April 11-12.
- Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single contest will feature a 12 p.m. start time.
- The Terriers are currently atop the PL standings at 8-1 with the Raiders in second at 7-2.
