DELAND, Fla. – Catcher Christy Leath hit a two-run home run in support of Brittany Detwiler, who tossed a four-hit shutout, as the Boston University softball team beat Cornell 5-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The victory enabled the Terriers to avoid a sweep, as the Big Red won the opener 3-2. BU is now 6-13 on the season and has split four games in DeLand.
In the first game, the Terriers jumped on top early, as Melissa Dubay scored on a Cornell error in the second inning. BU increased its lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Liz Alley’s single plated Brandi Shields, who had hit a one-out double.
The Big Red began their comeback in the bottom of the sixth, as Jenna Campagnolo singled home Samantha Hare to cut the Terrier lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Cornell tied the game on Erin Murtha’s RBI single. The Big Red loaded the bases with one out when Campagnolo hit a ground ball to Brooke Hudson at third base. Hudson fired home to get the second out, but Leath threw the ball into right field in an attempt to turn the double play, enabling the winning run to score.
Detwiler suffered the loss in relief, allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings. Cassidi Hardy was solid as a starter, allowing just one run on four hits in 5.1 innings. Offensively, BU had three hits, led by Shields, who was 2-3.
In the second game, Tyler Benson hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first and Leath deposited her third home run of the season over the left field fence to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. BU put the game away in the fifth with three runs thanks to an RBI double from Benson and a pair of run-scoring groundouts by Shields and Josey Mendez. The Terriers stole three bases in the inning to spark the rally.
Detwiler was untouchable in recording her third shutout of the season. She went the distance and allowed just one runner to reach third the entire game. She struck out four and walked one in improving to 4-6 on the season.
BU concludes play in DeLand on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Georgia Southern.
