Storrs, Conn. - The Boston University men’s tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory against the University of Connecticut on Tuesday, April 10. The win improves BU’s mark to 10-9 on the year, while UConn continues its three-match slide to a 5-12 record.
The team battled severe wintery weather to sweep the doubles point and take three singles matches in the victory.
After a sweep of the doubles and a dominating victory by senior Barrett Wolf (Boca Raton, Fla.) at No. 1 singles, BU lost three straight singles matches. Trailing 3-2, BU’s fate hinged on the play of senior co-captain Ross
Lohr (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Jeff Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill.). After losing the first set in each of their matches, Lohr and Chudacoff battled back to defeat their opponents and give the Terriers the victory. At sixth singles, Lohr won 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. With the match all square, Chudacoff won the decisive third-set tiebreaker and defeated his opponent, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
“Today was a big match for us,” coach Rocky Jarvis said. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially in these freezing conditions. But this goes to show that even when we don’t have our best stuff, we can still win because of smart play and determination.”
The Terriers began the day by taking all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At third doubles, Chudacoff and junior Phil DeMeo (Bedford, Mass.) were the first off the court after winning, 8-4. Wolf and junior Giulio Gallarotti (Higganum, Conn.) then clinched the point for BU by defeating their opponent, 8-6. Lohr and sophomore Charles Weinstein (New Rochelle, N.Y.) made it a clean sweep for the Terriers by winning 8-6 in second doubles.
Following yet another victory by Wolf at first singles, sophomore Miron Nissim (Milan, Italy) lost at the fifth singles position 6-3, 6-2. Weinstein then fell at number two singles, 6-1, 7-6 (5), and Gallarotti lost a tightly contested three set match in third singles, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. With BU losing 3-2 and unable to surrender another match, Lohr and Chudacoff delivered the victory for the Terriers.
The Terriers play their next match on Saturday, April 14 against Quinnipiac University at BU’s Track and Tennis Center.
