BOSTON - Five athletes from the Boston University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will travel to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend to participate in the 2007 NCAA East Regional held at James G. Pressly Stadium. The top five finishers in each individual event will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, held in Sacramento, Calif., on June 6-9.
Junior David Proctor and freshman Eric Ashe from the men's team, as well as senior Marisa Ryan, sophomore Rebecca Marshburn and freshman Whitney Ford from the women's team will all compete for BU.
The Terriers begin competition on Friday at 3:30 p.m., when Proctor will race in the 1,500 meters. Proctor qualified for the regional on April 6 at the Duke Invitational by crossing the finish line in 3:44.28, beating the NCAA qualifying mark and winning the event.
At 7:10, Marshburn will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, followed by Ryan racing in the 5,000 meters at 8:50. Ryan, similar to Proctor, qualified for the regional at the Duke Invitational. Ryan placed third during the meet with a time of 16:39.91, beating the qualifying time by more than 12 seconds. If the three finish in the top 10, they will compete in their respective finals on Saturday.
Ford will represent BU in the triple jump on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., as finals automatically follow the trials. Ford has been a strong competitor in the triple jump during the outdoor season, taking second at both the Duke and Tufts Invitationals before qualifying for the regional during the America East Championships.
Ashe will close out competition for the Terriers on Saturday night, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:45. Ashe also qualified for the regional during the conference meet, finishing second with a time of 9:03.48. The qualifying time was set at 9:07.00.
