Terriers Impress at Mt. SAC Relays, Husky Invitational

The Boston University outdoor track and field team appeared in multiple competitions over the weekend, participating in both the Mt. San Antonio College Relays and at the Husky Spring Invitational. Senior Jake Laroe had the top finish for the Terriers at Mt. SAC, placing third in the 1500m, while the women's 4x100 team set a new school record at UConn and senior Tahari James completed the fourth-best triple jump in the country, also finishing third in the 100m.
Laroe (3:49.62) and seniors David Proctor (3:45.18, 4) and Patrick Hoye (3:52.96, 7) all ranked in the top-10 at the Mt. SAC Relays, with sophomore Eric Ashe taking 10th in the 3000m steeplechase with a 9:06.50 time and freshman Emma Reed (4:34.82) placing 11th in the 1500m.
At the Husky Invitational, the women's team earned six first place finishes, including James's 13.64m distance in the triple jump. Freshman Alex Jackson placed eighth in the triple jump with a 10.53m distance, while senior Megan LaBella finished ninth in the shot put with a 9.58m throw and freshman Jen Fleser (40.52m) took eighth in the hammer throw. Sophomore Whitney Ford (5.87m) won the long jump, followed by senior Alyssa Fanucci (5.10m, 7) and LaBella (5.02m, 8). Sophomore Fiona Romeri took gold in the pole vault with a 3.50m height and freshman Karly Neveu placed sixth in the high jump, crossing at 1.60m.
James also placed third in the 100m, finishing with a 12.20 time, ahead of Ford (12.48, 5), senior Erin Catarius (12.75, 7), Jackson (12.78, 8), junior Edwina Clark (13.09, 10) and Fanucci (13.24, 11). Senior Marisa Ryan won the 5000m with a 16:37.12 time and freshman Molly James (4:58.40, 9) and junior Mollie Zapata (4:58.75, 10) both placed in the 1500m. Jackson (26.45) and freshman Amanda Howard (26.91) took 10th and 11th in the 200m, respectively, while graduate student Kat Warden (2:12.08) won the 800m and freshman Laura Martin (58.15) placed fourth in the 400m.
The women's side sent two 4x100m teams into competition, earning second and third with times of 46.68 - setting a new school record - and 48.94. BU also entered a 4x400m team that finished second with a 3:55.61 time. Junior Becky Marshburn (1:04.58, 4) and LaBella (17.68, 7) earned top-10 spots in the 100m hurdles, while Marshburn also took forth in the 400m hurdles with a 1:04.58 time, followed by sophomore Casey Jordan in sixth with a 1:04.63 mark. Senior Jessica Cickay won the 3000m steeplechase with an 11:01.13 time.
On the men's side, sophomore Jan Bicanic won the discus with a 51.30m distance, followed by freshman Dan Withrow (45.78m, 3), senior Dan Martin (43.91m, 5) and sophomore Logan Moore (41.30m, 8). Junior Jun Dambara took second in the high jump with a 1.89m height, while Moore placed third in the pole vault with a 4.27m mark. Freshman Rich Haigh (6.79m, 2) and senior Greg Daggett, jr., (6.01m, 10) both placed in the long jump, while Martin earned third place with a 14.67m shot put throw. Senior Andrew Beatman (48.59m) placed fifth in the javelin, followed by sophomore Chase Carnahan (44.99m, 7), and juniors Chris Conroy (43.00m, 10) and Mike Salem (37.67m, 12). Bicanic also took third in the hammer throw with a 47.78m throw, while Withrow placed sixth with a 35.85m distance.
Senior Chadd Steinhauser finished third in the 400m with a 49.69 mark, followed by senior Keith Buchanan (51.52, 9), junior Adam Churey (52.27, 15), sophomore Jason English (52.62, 16) and junior Joseph Pike (54.29, 16). Senior Nick Goodman earned the third spot in the 1500m with a 3:56.83 time, with sophomore David Polgar (4:03.96, 9) and freshman James Weider (4:11.75, 18) finishing afterwards. Junior Tom McLean (16:16.41) and senior Albert Crooker (17:55.00) took fifth and sixth in the 5000m, respectively, while sophomore Max Esposito (23.86) placed 11th in the 200m and junior Kodjo Wilder (11.76, 9), Esposito (12.02, 13) and junior David Barth (12.20, 14) all crossed in the 100m.
Junior Jason Nardella (15.64, 7), Daggett (16.59, 10) and Haigh (17.04, 12) all competed in the 110m hurdles and sophomore Mark Mazzochette (55.58) finished fourth in the 400m hurdles. Terrier teams took third in the 4x100m (42.82) and second in the 4x400m (3:24.96).
Next weekend, BU will compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., beginning on Thursday and running through the weekend.
