Walkonen Qualifies as Terriers Finish Fourth at Battle of Beantown

BOSTON - Despite an NCAA-qualifying run from senior Andrea Walkonen, the Boston University women's indoor track and field team finished fourth at the second annual Battle of Beantown on Saturday at the Gordon Track and Tennis Center. Walkonen provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships with a time of 9:32.77 in the 3,000-meter run, more than 20 seconds better than her nearest competitor, while senior Edwina Clark and junior Whitney Ford also won events for the Terriers.

Boston College captured the Beantown title for the second straight season with 143 points. Host Harvard followed with 132 points and Northeastern posted 115 points to edge BU's 114 points for third place.

Clark won the long jump with a 5.90m leap and Ford finished second, qualifying for the ECAC championships with a 5.81m jump. Ford also qualified for the ECAC meet by winning the triple jump with a mark of 11.93m. Sophomore Alex Jackson was sixth in the long jump (5.29m), third in the triple jump (11.21m) and sixth in the 60m dash (7.90).

Sophomore Karly Neveu tied for third in the high jump, clearing 1.60m, and junior Fiona Romeri was fifth in the pole vault at 3.20m.

Freshman Shelby Walton finished second in both the 60m dash (7.64) and 200m dash (25.44), while senior Erin Catarius was third in the 60m dash (7.81) and freshman Jackie Dim was fifth in the 200m dash (25.70) and sixth in the 500m dash (1:17.83).

Sophomores Laura Martin (58.71) and Amanda Howard (59.21) earned points in the 400m dash, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Senior Becky Marshburn came in second in the 500m dash with a 1:16.41 and was fourth in the 60m hurdles at 9.53.

Senior Katie Weider qualified for ECACs with a second-place showing in the 1,000m run, crossing in 2:53.55. Senior Mollie Zapata was sixth in the 3,000m run in 10:09.46.

In the relays, BU's 4x400m team finished third in 3:58.48 and in the cage, sophomore Jen Fleser was third in the weight throw with a 13.60m toss.

The Terriers are back in action on Friday (Feb. 13), hosting the BU Valentine Invitational starting at 1 p.m. at the Track and Tennis Center.
