EUGENE, Ore. - Competing in her final collegiate race, Boston University's Andrea Walkonen just missed out on earning team points with a ninth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run during the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday night at Hayward Field. The Jaffrey, N.H. native finished 0.26 seconds behind Stanford's Stephanie Marcy with a time of 33:33.18.
A 2009 All-American in cross country and indoor track (5,000m), Walkonen led a pack of 24 at the midway point but was unable to keep up with the pace, as collegiate record holder Lisa Koll of Iowa State eventually took over and won at 32:49.35, nearly 24 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. UCSB's Danielle Domenichelli placed seventh at 33:32.81, just edging out Marcy and Walkonen.
The ninth-place finish marks Walkonen's best performance at the NCAA outdoor event. In 2009, she was unable to finish the race due to injury after placing 13th in 2008.
The conclusion of the race marks the end of the 2009-10 athletics season for Boston University, which recently captured its fifth straight America East Commissioner's Cup after winning six league titles.
