Posting the ninth-fastest collegiate time ever back in March at 32:31.33 during the Stanford Invitational, Walkonen took fourth at the NCAA East Regional with a time of 34:49.83 to earn the NCAA berth.
A 2009 All-American in cross country and indoor track (5,000m), Walkonen qualified for the outdoor NCAAs last season in the same event but was unable to finish the race due to injury. She took 13th in 2008 behind then-senior Marisa Ryan, who placed fourth for All-America status.
