CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Backed by a pair of first-half goals from graduate student Lisa Kevorkian as well as an insurance tally from junior Jessica Luscinski, the Boston University women's soccer team (3-4-0) upset No. 22 William & Mary, 3-1, on Friday afternoon on the first day of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. BU handed the Tribe its first loss of the year as it falls to 4-1-1 on the young season.
It was the Terriers' first win over a ranked opponent since Sept. 17, 2008, when they upended then-No. 19 Connecticut, 1-0. It is also BU's seventh win overall against a nationally recognized squad.
BU maintained the 12-11 advantage in shots, while William & Mary held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Freshman Kelly King went the full 90 minutes in net, making four saves.
Kevorkian put the Terriers up early with a goal just 44 seconds into regulation as her shot from the top of the box curled into the upper corner for the game's first tally. Nearly 25 minutes later, she extended the Terriers' lead with a shot from 15 yards out off a feed from Luscinski that slide past William and Mary goalkeeper Katherine Yout to the far post.
The Tribe's best opportunity of the first half came in the 25th minute as freshman Audrey Barry fired off a shot towards King, however, the rookie netminder made the stop to preserve the one-goal edge.
In the 61st minute, Luscinski upped the lead to 3-0 with a strike to the near post from 12 yards after classmate Tiya Gallegos dished it off to her. It was Luscisnki's second goal of the season and third point of the game.
Barry spoiled the Terriers' shutout bid as she broke through in the 64th minute after beating King to a through ball and tapping it into the netting for her third tally of the season.
BU will next face host UVA on Sunday (Sept. 12) at 2 p.m.
