Terriers to Compete in Program Record 10 Events at NCAA East Preliminaries
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Katie Matthews and sophomores Allison Barwise and R.J. Page of the Boston University track & field teams have been named to the America East All-Academic Team, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Matthews and Barwise also received all-academic honors following the 2011 indoor season, while Page earned the distinction for the first time.
A Rocky Hill, Conn., native, Matthews helped the Terriers to a second-place finish at the America East outdoor championships. She captured the 5,000m title with a time of 16:26.41 and has maintained a 3.61 GPA majoring in speech, language and hearing sciences.
The championships' Most Outstanding Field Performer, Barwise set America East records in both the high jump and heptathlon. After securing a 1.78m leap in the high jump, the Orange, Conn., native collected the heptathlon win for the second straight year with 4,956 points. Barwise has earned a 3.49 GPA in the College of General Studies.
Page helped the men's team to a third-place finish at the championships, where he earned Most Outstanding Track Performer honors and the Coaches' Award, presented to the student-athlete who accumulated the most points.
The sprinter captured individual titles in the 100m (10.55) and 200m (21.22) dashes, establishing an America East record in the latter. The sophomore also helped set a championship record in the 4x100m relay and has recorded a 3.35 GPA while majoring in economics.
In all, 21 student-athletes were named to the outdoor track & field all-academic squad.
To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution.
