Championships Preview: Barwise | Ford | Matthews
BOSTON - Senior Whitney Ford, junior Katie Matthews and sophomore Allison Barwise of the Boston University women's track & field team will compete at the four-day NCAA championships, to be held June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
A U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association First-Team All-American during the indoor season, Matthews will lead the BU contingent when she competes in the 10,000-meter final on Wednesday (June 8). The 2011 America East outdoor champion advanced to Des Moines with a fifth-place finish (33:50.86) at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 26.
The Rocky Hill, Conn., native will also attempt to become the first Terrier to earn All-America status during both the indoor and outdoor seasons since Tahari James and Marisa Ryan each accomplished the feat in 2008.
On Thursday (June 9), Barwise will compete in the high jump. One of seven underclassmen in the 24-participant field, the sophomore qualified for the championships with a 1.78m jump during preliminary-round competition.
Ford will round out the action for the Terriers when she participates in the triple jump on Friday (June 10). The senior will make her first appearance at an NCAA championship after finishing 11th in the event with a 12.57m leap at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
