Terriers Split with Brown and Columbia at Competition Pool

BOSTON - The Boston University men's swimming and diving team split in its meet against Brown and Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Competition Pool. The Terriers defeated Brown, 162.50-135.50, and fell to Columbia, 196-102.
Sophomore Jeff Thomas claimed BU's only individual first-place finish of the meet, winning the 100 breaststroke in 58.08. Thomas also earned points for the Terriers by finishing second in the 200 IM (1:55.92) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (51.61).
BU was victorious in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Justin Gilmartin, Cole Puchi, Lincoln Kupke and Daniel Kempf claimed first place in 1:25.34.
Rookie Alec Pokornowski paced the Terriers in the distance events by finishing second in the 1000 freestyle (9:35.99) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:44.12). Fellow freshman Cole Puchi took third in the 200 freestyle (1:42.50) and later captured second place in the 100 freestyle (43.66).
Sophomore Nik Astashinsky was the top Terrier in the 100 backstroke, placing third with a time of 52.39. Astashinksy later returned for a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:55.45) behind teammate Connor Stuewe, who took second in 1:52.29.
Senior Daniel Kempf clocked in third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.31 while classmate Jackson Hill was right behind him, finish fourth in 21.37.
In the diving events, BU was led by sophomore Jared Scheck, as he claimed third on the 3-meter board (260.30) and fourth on the 3-meter board (264.75).
BU returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3, as the Terriers make the short trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m.
