The Boston University men’s and women’s track & field teams will compete this weekend at the America East Championships in Bangor, Maine, on May 5 and 6.
The women’s team will look to sweep the 2012 indoor and outdoor title and claim its fourth-ever outdoor crown. The men’s team finished second at the indoor championship and will be in search of the program’s first-ever outdoor title.
For the men, junior R.J. Page enters the weekend in the midst of a fantastic outdoor campaign. He was the Most Outstanding Track Performer at last year’s meet and is the defending champion in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Page has the fastest time in the conference this season in both of those events; he has run the 100m dash in 10.57 seconds and the 200m dash in 20.98 seconds.
Senior Tewado Latty has the second-best time in the conference in the 200m dash with a mark of 21.58 seconds. He is also the defending champion in the 400m dash and currently has the conference’s best time of the season in that event (46.98). Also expected to do well on the track is junior Stephen Vitale, who has the conference’s top time in the 400m hurdles (52.02) and was part of the 4x400m relay team that set the school record at the Penn Relays last weekend (3:08.85). He will be joined in the quartet by Page, Latty and Senick.
In field events, freshman Connor Sullivan will have a chance to win the high jump, as he owns the best outdoor mark in the conference this season (2.06m). Senior Jeff Pelage (51.64m) and freshman Ethan Knight (44.47m) will be contenders in the discus, while freshman Michael Maloof (50.48m) and senior Michael Murowchick (57.16m) will aim for victory in the hammer throw and javelin, respectively.
On the women’s side, the Terriers boast last year’s Most Outstanding Track and Field performers in senior Shelby Walton and junior Allison Barwise. Walton is the defending champion in the 100m dash and 200m dash and owns the top 200m time (24.05) and second-best 100m time (11.73) in the conference this season. Freshman Gemma Acheampong has been strong in the 100m dash as well this season and will look to make a mark in her first-ever outdoor championship.
Barwise is the top seed in the heptathlon (5014 points) and the high jump (1.80m), and is the second seed in the long jump (5.43m). She is the defending champion in both the heptathlon and the high jump. Elsewhere in the field events, the Terriers will have sophomores Chelsea Curry (13.25m) and Sarah Dillard (12.95m) as contenders in the shot put. Dillard also owns the second-best mark in the discus (43.41m).
