BOSTON - Returning to Big East country after visiting the ACC last week, the Boston University men's soccer team will travel to Providence on Friday with action slated to begin at 3 p.m. The Friars mark the fifth consecutive opponent for the Terriers to be coming off an appearance in the second round of the 2011 NCAA tournament.
Sitting at 1-3, BU will try to snap a two-game losing streak after falling at No. 1 North Carolina (2-1) and No. 16 Wake Forest (3-1). The Terriers battled hard with the defending NCAA champion Tar Heels, recording the first goal allowed by UNC in 390 minutes of action, but just couldn't find the equalizer.
Named America East Rookie of the Year last season, sophomore Dominique Badji headed in the goal while leading the team in shot attempts with four. The Terriers tallied 13 shots, including eight on goal, against UNC, which had needed a combined two saves in the previous two contests. Coincidentally, Badji leads BU in shots with 13.
Junior Derek McCaffrey has been a key contributor on the offensive end, recording his first-career game winner at then-No. 10 Boston College before adding an assist against the Demon Deacons. Sophomore Parker Powell has the team's other goal, while senior Michael Bustamante, junior Anthony Ciccone and freshman Mac McGuire all have one assist each.
On the defensive end, sophomore
Nick Thomson holds a .692 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average. He has one shutout on the season against the Eagles, which marked the first against BC since 1998.
Last year, Thomson recorded one save to help BU shut out No. 22 Friars, 1-0, at Nickerson Field. He and the backline face a Providence squad that has scored three goals in four contests. The Friars began the year with a 2-1 overtime loss at Northeastern followed by a 3-1 defeat at Monmouth.
Last week competing in the Ocean State Soccer Classic, Providence pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory at Bryant before dropping a 1-0 loss to No. 22 Brown, an opponent BU will host on Sept. 13. Keasel Broome has started three of the games this season at net and holds a .733 save percentage and 1.25 GAA.
The Terriers own an 11-3 advantage in the all-time series but the 2009 contest marked the first between the team teams in 20 years.
Following the contest, BU will conclude its six-game road trip at No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 7 p.m.
