Track & Field Teams Open Season on Saturday

BOSTON – The Boston University men’s and women’s track & field teams began the 2013 indoor season by hosting the BU Season Opener on Saturday at the Track and Tennis Center.
The men’s team finished third among the seven Division I teams with 58 points. The women’s squad was fourth with 55 points. Northeastern claimed both team titles, as the men collected 150 points and the women totaled 132 points.
On the men’s side, freshmen Justin Flynn and Cameron Williams shined in their collegiate debuts in the 60m dash. Flynn was second with a time of 6.99 seconds while Williams was right behind him in third (7.03). Also in the sprints, senior Brian Leonard had a time of 23.60 seconds in the 200m dash.
In the field events, freshman David Oluwadara also had a terrific debut, as he had a mark of 14.19 meters in the triple jump. Senior Blake Edwards (14.04m) finished third and freshman Tyler Malone (12.63m) made his collegiate debut in that event.
Junior Ethan Knight secured second in the shot put with a mark of 15.20 meters while senior Connor Sullivan also had a second-place performance with a mark of 2.00 meters in the high jump. Senior Samuel Arsenault finished fifth in the long jump (6.56m) while sophomore Fritz Howser (4.25m) and freshman Brian Shaeffer (4.10m) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault.
On the women’s side, the Terriers had the top two teams in the 4x400m relay. The freshman quartet of Toria Levy, Kerri Graber, Ally Saccone and Djenne Parris won with a time of 3:48.70. They edged the foursome of sophomore Christy Wood, senior Carolyn Maynard, junior Victoria Perez and senior Hannah Wiley (3:49.35).
Four Terriers placed in the top seven of the 200m dash, including second-place Wood (24.45) and third-place Maynard (24.79). Parris (25.18) and Wiley (25.22) were sixth and seventh, respectively. Senior Janet Mellor finished fourth in the 60m dash (7.84) to round out a successful day on the track.
In the field events, freshman Adrienne Pascucci finished fifth in the high jump (1.50m) and also ran in the prelims of the 60m hurdles (9.84) during her collegiate debut. Sophomore Catherine Sampson joined Pascucci in the hurdles (9.92) and also competed in the shot put (10.34m).
Senior Sarah Dillard placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 15.53 meters while Tessa Runels placed third in the triple jump (11.13m). Freshman Erica Treske made her collegiate debut with a mark of 4.78 meters in the long jump and 9.95 meters in the shot put.
BU will be off until January when the Terriers host the Multi-Team Meet on Jan. 16.
