STAMFORD, Conn. - In a hard-fought battle, Fairfield won two of the three doubles matches for the first point and added three more in singles to defeat the Boston University men's tennis team, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Indoor.
Earning their third straight one-point win over the Terriers (5-3), the Stags improve to 7-3 on the season.
Freshman Stefan Lemire and senior Michael Kopelman started off in doubles with a comfortable 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot. However, Fairfield came back with two 8-6 victories in the top two slots to claim the first point.
Coincidentally in singles, sophomore Chanon Varapongisittikul (#2), freshman Eric Miller (#6) and Lemire (#5) all dropped a total of five games each to win in straight sets and give BU three points.
Playing at No. 3, junior Jesse Frieder rallied from a set down to force a third set but came up just short in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 loss. Senior Josh Friedman battled to a second set tiebreaker, but Fairfield came out ahead in the top singles match, 6-3, 7-6(5).
The Stags clinched the team victory against sophomore Emilio Teran in another hard-fought contest, 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 4 position.
