BOSTON - Despite a hat trick from senior Danielle Etrasco and 13 saves from junior Christina Sheridan, the Boston University women's lacrosse team dropped a 7-6 overtime decision to UMBC at Nickerson Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the conference-opening loss, the Terriers drop to 2-5 (0-1 AE), while the Retrievers improve to 7-2 (1-0 AE).

Etrasco led all players with four points off three goals and an assist, while junior Elizabeth Morse tallied a pair of goals. Sophomore Jenna Boarman recorded one goal with junior Sydney Godett and freshman Ally Adams both posting one assist each.

Facing a 5-1 deficit early in the second half, UMBC scored six of the game's seven final goals, including one with 24 seconds left in regulation and another with three seconds remaining in overtime, to earn the victory.

The Terriers won the draw control after the Retrievers' sixth goal and had two shot attempts before the buzzer sounded, but senior Kristen Mogavero and Boarman were both just wide as the contest went to an extra session. The Retrievers' Kendall Mason finished the game with 10 saves.

Sheridan and BU's defense had several impressive stops, holding UMBC to just one goal on eight free position attempts. However, the Terriers were 10-of-21 in clear attempts with the Retrievers going 9-of-13.

UMBC's Kris Coppolino opened with a goal 3:58 into the contest, and the Retrievers held the 1-0 lead for the next eight minutes. BU though scored three goals over the following eight minutes behind two scores from Morse to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.

Etrasco tallied two goals within 45 seconds of each other to extend BU's lead to 5-1 with 27:11 remaining in regulation. After two goals by the Retrievers at 20:00 and 17:00, respectively, Boarman posted her third of the season 51 seconds later with help from Etrasco.

Eight minutes later, UMBC began mounting its comeback by converting on two BU turnovers to cut the deficit to 6-5 with 5:33 remaining. Winning the ensuing draw control, the Retrievers were unable to find the back of the net on five attempts.

After forcing BU's 13th turnover of the half with 56 seconds left, UMBC though was able to record the equalizer behind Kris Coppolino's second goal of the contest.

In overtime, neither squad was able to get a shot off through the first three minutes of action. Mogavero's attempt was blocked by a defender with 2:09 left.

The final minute was frantic, as the teams turned the ball over back and forth trying to score before time expired. After a BU miscue with under 25 seconds left, UMBC picked the ball up on the Terriers' side of the field and was getting into position for a shot before getting fouled to earn the free position attempt.

Harkey took advantage and scored on UMBC's eighth try to claim the victory for the Retrievers.

BU will remain home and next host Harvard on Friday (March 29) with action set to begin at 7 p.m.
