CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Graduate Student Katie Matthews of the Boston University women's track & field team and senior R.J. Page of the men's track & field team were each named America East Winter Scholar-Athletes, the conference announced on Thursday.
This is the second time that Page has been named an America East Scholar-Athlete, as he also earned the honor in 2011. The senior sprinter carries a 3.49 GPA as a dual major in economics and business administration and management. He has excelled in the classroom throughout his time at BU and was honored last year with the E. Ray Speare Award, which is given annually to the top male scholar-athlete.
A multiple-time Dean's List and America East Commissioner's Honor Roll designee, Page had a fantastic indoor season. He broke his own school record in the 200m dash (21.25) and was part of the 4x400m relay team that was second at the IC4A Championships with a school-record time of 3:08.41, which is the fastest time of any New England school in history.
Matthews, who was named Boston University's Woman of the Year on Monday at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, has a 3.94 GPA while pursuing master's of science in speech-language pathology. She is a three-time America East All-Academic selection and has earned America East Commissioner's Honor Roll status and made Boston U.'s Dean's List five times apiece.
Matthews became the first Terrier female to earn two All-America selections in the same season, garnering First Team honors in the 5,000m run and Second Team honors in the 3,000m run thanks to a strong showing at the NCAA Championships. She broke school records in both events and finished fifth in the 5,000m run at the NCAA Championships.
Both Page and Matthews will automatically be eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to be announced this summer.
