CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Graduate student Katie Matthews of the Boston University women's track & field team and junior Rich Peters of the men's track & field team were each named America East Track Performer of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Matthews shattered her own school record in the 5,000m run at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday night. The only collegiate harrier in the elite section of the event, Matthews finished with a record time of 15:44.19, nearly 27 seconds faster than her previous time of 16:01.16, set in 2011. The Rocky Hill, Conn., native now has the eighth-fastest time in the nation.
Peters, also competing at the Payton Jordan Invitational, broke his own school record in the 1,500m run. Competing in the elite section of the event, Peters posted a time of 3:40.05. His previous record was 3:42.69, set last year at the NCAA Championships. That time broke a school record that had stood for 26 years. He now has the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA.
BU will next be in action on Friday night at the Florida State Twilight.
