The Boston University track and field teams will send three athletes to the NCAA Championships, held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
Junior Rich Peters and graduate student Zachary Ray of the men's team will join graduate student Katie Matthews of the women's squad at the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon. The Terriers last had three athletes compete at the NCAA Championships in 2011, when Matthews joined Allison Barwise and former BU standout Whitney Ford.
Like in 2011, Matthews will race in the national final of the 10,000m run. She placed third at the East prelims on May 23 with a time of 33:27.28. It is now the fastest time in the conference, as she edged Maine's Corey Conner by over a second in Thursday's race. The Rocky Hill, Conn., native was a two-time All-American during the indoor season.
Peters posted a time of 3:48.12 to finish fifth in his heat of the 1,500m run and automatically qualify for the NCAA semifinals for the second straight season. Last year, he finished sixth in the national final and was named a First Team All-American. He was also the national runner-up in the mile during the 2012 indoor season.
Ray posted a time of 51.92 seconds in the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles to secure the 12th and final spot in the NCAA semifinals. This is the second straight year that Ray has advanced to the national semifinals of the 400m hurdles, as he also accomplished the feat in 2012 as a senior at Maryland.
Four other Terriers competed at the NCAA Division I Men's Track and Field Preliminary Championships at North Carolina A&T this past weekend. Seniors Tewado Latty (400m dash) and Nikko Brady (100m hurdles) advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events while freshman Reuben Horace (hammer throw) and senior R.J. Page (200m dash) were also in action over the weekend.
