NEW ORLEANS - Graduate student Katie Matthews of the Boston University women's track and field team was named a First Team All-American, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Monday.
Matthews earned the distinction after her fifth-place performance in the national final of the 10,000m run at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Ore. She posted a time of 33:43.26 for her highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m run.
The Rocky Hill, Conn., native made program history as she became the first Terrier athlete, male or female, to earn three All-America selections in a calendar year. Matthews was a two-time All-American during the indoor season thanks to strong performances in the 3,000m run and 5,000m run, including a fifth-place performance in the latter event.
Matthews, who was named America East Woman of the Year on June 4, will depart BU as a five-time All-American and with three school records to her name. Matthews holds the 5,000m indoor and outdoor records along with the 3,000m indoor record. All three records were set in 2013.
