CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Graduate student Katie Matthews of the Boston University women's track and field team was named America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday.
Matthews, who was named America East Woman of the Year in June, maintained a 3.94 GPA while pursuing a master's of science degree in speech-language pathology. She was an America East Scholar-Athlete during both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons this year. Matthews was also named to multiple America East All-Academic squads and honor rolls.
The Rocky Hill, Conn., native was as impressive on the track as she was in the classroom. She broke two school records during the indoor season, including the 5,000m record during the NCAA Championships. She finished fifth in that event to receive USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors. Matthews also broke the school record in the 3,000m run and eventually earned USTFCCCA Second Team All-America accolades in that event.
During the outdoor season, she finished fifth in the 10,000m run at the NCAA Championships and was named a USTFCCCA First Team All-American. Matthews also shattered her school record in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:44.19. She concluded 2013 as the first Terrier athlete, male or female, to earn three All-America selections in one calendar year.
